Pediatric Orthodontist in Hobbs, NM
Gift Your Child With a Smile That Will Last a Lifetime
When children visit an orthodontist in their earlier stage of life, you’ll have the peace of mind to know if any preventive measures are needed or any potential serious issues are detected. This is why Farnsworth Orthodontics and our pediatric orthodontist in Hobbs, NM, follow the recommendation of The American Association of Orthodontists, which urges all parents to bring their children to be evaluated by a trained orthodontic specialist at the age of seven.
Early Evaluation – Why Sooner is Better Than Later
Early evaluation does not necessarily mean early treatment! In fact, most parents who bring their child to Dr. Farnsworth for an early evaluation leave the office happy to know that orthodontic treatment can wait – or won’t be needed at all. An early evaluation with Dr. Farnsworth gives him the opportunity to examine your child’s bite and jaw alignment. Doing so enables him to see if there is any preventative treatment that could reduce the severity or expense of treatment after all your child’s adult teeth have come in. If your child does need early treatment, our experienced orthodontist will follow the process below.
Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment Guides Your Child’s Growth
Our pediatric orthodontist can both straighten your child’s teeth and align their jaw with little to no invasive treatment using our two-phase orthodontic treatment. This treatment works by guiding your child’s growth before their jaw has fully developed, and will help ensure a healthy and beautiful smile.
Candidates for early orthodontic treatment include children aged seven and older who are experiencing issues such as teeth crowding or a misaligned jaw. Children grow rapidly and directing the alignment of the upper and lower jaws is easier than trying to correct a jaw after it is already grown. Early treatment provides a good framework to ensure adequate room for your child’s permanent teeth.
Two-phase orthodontic treatment can also prevent later removal of permanent teeth to correct overcrowding and/or surgical procedures to align the upper and lower jaws.
The Beauty of Harmonious Alignment
In phase one of our treatment, we focus on developing the jaw size to contain all the permanent teeth and to align the upper and lower jaws. Certain appliances, determined on a case-by-case basis, will be used to accomplish this and will result in creating enough room for permanent teeth to grow.
Phase two starts when all permanent teeth have come in and usually requires wearing braces for up to two years, followed by retainers to ensure lasting results. The end result is each tooth will have an exact location in the mouth in line with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. When this alignment is accomplished, the teeth will function together harmoniously and properly.
